It was 34 years ago today (October 20, 1977), that a plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in a swamp near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Skynyrd was traveling to a show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The crash claimed the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backup singer Cassie Gaines, manager Dean Kilpatrick, as well as the two pilots.
Here is Lynyrd Skynyrd performing their signature song, "Free Bird", live in Oakland before the plane crash in October of '77.
