The fifth annual Sunset Strip Music Festival, scheduled for Aug. 16-18 in Los Angeles, will pay tribute to the legacy of the Doors with a three-day celebration featuring performances from an eclectic array of well-known artists.

The lineup, announced yesterday (June 13) in a press release, makes plenty of room for acts not normally associated with the band — or classic rock in general — including Marilyn Manson, the Offspring, Steve Aoki, Bad Religion, De La Soul, and Das Racist. Black Label Society is also being listed as a “very special guest.”

The press release promises that many of the bands performing “will celebrate the Doors by performing their take on some of the Doors’ legendary songs,” and if attendees can’t get their music fix from the main event, which is being held outdoors on the Strip, they’ll be able to duck into a variety of local venues — including the Roxy and the Whisky A Go-Go — to catch more than 50 other bands.

“The Doors are honored to be celebrated by the magical, legendary Strip,” responded organist Ray Manzarek.

Added guitarist Robby Krieger, “A great leap forward from the “Summer Of Love” to today. What a great time we’re going to have! The Sunset Strip. Live bands, loud music, Rock and Roll. It’s the ‘60s all over again, and everyone is welcome. Dancing in the streets. Joy, Love, Peace. And we want to get it all together just One – More – TIME! Could this be the beginning of the new Golden Age? Let it be so.” (Holy enthusiasm, Batman!)

“It’s a thrill to be honored by The Sunset Strip Music Festival this year. Venice was our home, but The Doors lived and came of age on the Sunset Strip. It’s exciting to see that the legacy we helped create is still alive and thriving today!” chimed in drummer John Densmore.

Tickets for the 2012 Sunset Strip Music Festival are on sale now via TicketWeb, and are being offered at a variety of levels, from a $75 general admission pass to a $250 VIP pass.
